English

At our school English is taught daily in discrete lessons and applied across the curriculum. English lessons are linked to the-half termly topic or a high quality text.
Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 have guided reading sessions where children read either in an adult-led group or work independently on applying reading skills.. In Reception and KS1 classes also have a daily phonics lesson. A catch-up programme is in place in KS2 for any pupils needing additional input.
We have a strong home/school reading programme in place in EYFS and KS1 to support children with their reading. Children in Reception and KS1 will be given a book to take home from the Jelly and Bean or Oxford Reading Tree schemes. In KS2 children are encouraged to choose their own book from the reading corner to take home.
Our English lessons are based around a text. The rules of grammar are taught both in the context of the lesson and also discretely. Children practise their spoken language skills through role play activities across the curriculum.
Spellings are taught separately in discrete lessons. We encourage children to have a fluent, cursive handwriting style by the end of lower KS2.
